If you want to save on heating oil costs in the winter, you need to prepare your home this summer. With the right preparation, you can reduce the amount of energy and heating oil it takes to keep your home warm, during the winter time.

Upgrade Your Heating Systems

Heating systems are designed to last for a long time. Traditionally, heating systems are designed to last for around two decades. Although your heating system may last for longer than two decades, it will not work effectively for that long. If you want your heating system to be as effective as possible, you are going to want to upgrade your heating system after twenty years. New heating systems are significantly more energy efficient than those made decades ago. A more efficient system will help lower the cost of using heating oil to keep your home warm during the winter. It is best to change out your heating system in the summertime, before you need it and when heating installers are not as busy.

Switch to Cleaner Heating Oil

Another way to save on heating oil is by switching to a cleaner oil. With new heating systems, you can blend biofuels together with your traditional heating oils, in order to create a cleaner oil. This will allow you to reduce the amount of heating oil you use, while being more environmentally responsible, as well.

You can also see if any of your local heating oil dealers have any of the newer, cleaner heating oils you can use in your system. Talk to your local heating oil dealers and see what cleaner heating oil additives and oils you can use with your heating equipment.  

Change Out the Thermostat

Finally, you need to make sure you are using the right thermostat with your heating system. You need to upgrade to what is considered a smart, or programmable, thermostat. This type of thermostat will provide you with important information, such as humidity readings as well as temperature readings, which will help you more accurately set your heater. You can then program your thermostat to specific temperatures for specific times of the day and days of the week. This level of control, which may seem small, can really help reduce the cost you spend on heating oil.
