How To Know If A Compact Tractor Is Right For Your Property

Posted on: 7 July 2021

A compact tractor will allow you to add more horsepower to your farm. However, you'll need to find a tractor that has the right qualities that will help you make your farm a success.

Tractor Horsepower

If you will be handling heavy equipment, you will need a tractor that has a good amount of horsepower. You can determine how much horsepower your tractor has by the PTO horsepower. This is calculated by the RPM multiplied by the torque.

The amount of horsepower you will need depends on how much land you have and the terrain you will be working with. If you have a lot of hills, tree roots, or rough terrain, you may need more horsepower. You will also need a tractor that has the speed you need to get your work down as quickly as possible.

Tractor Tires

It's important to take into consideration the type of terrain you'll be working with because this will determine the tires that your compact tractor will need. For example, if the surface is smooth, you will need deep grooves and lugs that will allow you to grip the surface without the tractor sliding. Otherwise, it will be more difficult to be productive. Grip is especially important for hilly terrains so your tractor won't slide backward.

With a flat terrain, you will need the opposite of the tires you'd use for smooth terrain. By having smaller grooves, you'll subject your tractor to less wear and tear.

Tractor Features

Fortunately, a compact tractor can use a variety of attachments so you can get a lot done with a single tractor. These can include:

  • Mowers
  • Pallet forks
  • Box blades
  • Front end loaders

However, if you will be pulling heavy equipment, you will need a tractor that will have the horsepower necessary to pull a large amount of weight. Then, you will be able to use a pallet form to lift heavy objects without having to touch them. A backhoe is useful if you need to lift heavy earth and is essential if you will be digging a trench.

You will be able to use a quick-connect mower deck so you can more quickly mow your property. Even more useful is a rotary cutter. There are some forms of vegetation that are too tall for your lawn mower to be able to cut and they can be essential when you're working a property that has a lot of vegetation. The great news is that you can always purchase attachments as you need them once you own a compact tractor.
