Reasons Why You Might Need To Replace Parts In Your Electric Motor

Posted on: 7 December 2022

If your company uses one or more electric motors to get the job done on a daily basis, regular upkeep or maintenance of these motors is likely a high priority for you. But even with regular maintenance, things can break down over time and you might need to contact some local electric motor parts suppliers. Here are some specific situations to watch out for or to try and mitigate if you want your electric motor parts to last for as long as possible.

Temperatures Too High for Too Long

Anytime a motor is in operation, it's natural for some heat to be generated. Your motor likely also has some insulation to protect its parts from this heat. But if you notice that the heat has suddenly spiked in intensity, it's time to shut down the motor and search for a problem. Leaving a motor running at a temperature that's too high for too long isn't just a potential fire hazard; it will also cause motor parts like your rotor or bearings to wear down much faster.

Wet or Humid Conditions and Corrosion

If there's one thing everyone knows doesn't mix well with electricity, it's water. That could prove troublesome for your electric motors if you work in an area with high humidity or wet conditions. Make sure your motors are properly insulated and try running a dehumidifier or install a ventilation system if needed to get the humidity out of the air. Exposure to wet conditions or humidity could cause multiple parts to fail due to corrosion.

Power Surges or Spikes

If your electric motor is drawing power for a specific source, you should take steps to limit any unexpected power surges or spikes. Getting hit with too much electrical current is not good for any electrical device and could cause something to get fried. If you know a power surge has happened, shut down operations and closely inspect each motor and the rest of the equipment for signs of damage.

A Dirty Work Environment

Water and humidity are not the only things that could lead to corrosion in your devices or equipment. Sometimes even dirt or just a lot of dust in the air can help with the development of corrosion and rust as well. Consider running an air purifier if needed to remove dust from the air around the electric motors. Failure to do so may result in contamination and a shortened lifespan for your equipment.

Contact a supplier of electric motor parts, such as Commercial Electric Motor Service Inc., to discuss your specific needs.
